Monotype Imaging has announced support for the use of Embedded OpenType (EOT) for non-commercial websites (full press release is here). This covers the whole Linotype, Monotype, and ITC typeface libraries. Why is this so great for Arabic? The Linotype Library has a lot of interesting Arabic typefaces (including mine!) and this new End User License Agreement means that tomorrow you can have a website using my Frutiger Arabic, as long as it is for non-commercial use. If your website fits the description of commercial use, then you need to write to Linotype or Monotype Imaging to get more info.

Important to note: EOT is only supported on Internet Explorer which is roughly 3 quarters of the web users.

So, when it comes to Arabic, the choice for fonts for the web is limited to 2, so even if EOT only works on Internet Explorer, it is still worth offering this breakthrough to the other 3 quarters of web users.
